GIFs and Internet Memes You May Have Missed

Animated Madness and Mayhem to Make you Laugh

If you look at the animated GIF to the right, you’ll see a good example of a classic animated GIF. It’s a short sequence of images but when put together they work really well. Add a one liner that’s funny and you have a winner.

Animated GIFs have been around since the very early days of the Internet, but it’s really become an art form to come up with one that goes viral and becomes an official meme that spreads quickly around the world.

Classic Animated GIF Memes

Here are some other classic animated GIFs you may have missed over the years somehow.

Haters Gonna Hate

The origin of this meme starts back in 2008 when an artist put up an animated gif of a cartoon character strutting in an endless loop. Then, in 2009 someone started the idea of using the phrase “Haters Gonna Hate” with a still picture of some sort of activity taking place – the more ridiculous the better. Eventually the two memes bled together and an outbreak of “Haters Gonna Hate” animated GIFs broke out in 2011 – and still continues to this day unfortunately!

Internet Fight

This meme started as a way to make fun of people who argue online in virtual forums. Because Internet arguing is so futile and doesn’t really solve anything, people began labeling pictures of people fighting with words saying that Internet arguments are pretty stupid. As always, the animated GIF people jumped on board with this meme and really helped it spread. Here’s one example you may have missed.

Scarlett Johansson Falling Down

Scarlett Johansson is a doll, a perfect sweetheart, but unfortunately that makes for a funny animated GIF for some people. This one was spread thanks to BuzzFeed originally, but since that time many others have taken up the cause and have gone out of their way to loop a GIF of her falling here, there and everywhere. How many times can you watch her fall? The record is 128 times by a man with no job in New Jersey.

Make Your Own

If you’ve been inspired by some of the classic animated GIFs above, you need to get your own GIF maker. Luckily, you can easily find a free GIF maker online that works really well. Once you have that, it’s all a matter of finding the right images and stringing them together so they’re animated. Just be careful, once you start making animated GIFs it can be very hard to stop – especially if one goes viral. Don’t let that stop you from getting some software and seeing what you can do. It really can be a lot of fun.
